Off-Gas Treatment in Electrolyzer with CataLite® Burner

High-temperature electrolysis produces hydrogen-rich and mixed off-gas streams that vary significantly in composition and thermal characteristics. These conditions place strict demands on auxiliary systems responsible for stabilizing and conditioning the process.
During transient or partial-load conditions, vent streams containing hydrogen and other off-gases must be treated to ensure:
- Operational safety
- Environmental compliance
- Efficient system control
The world-leading SOEC technology provider based in Northern Europe, relied on a fossil-fuel-supported combustion method to dispose of off-gases. Due to environmental regulations and economic disadvantages with their current system, they searched for a solution with complete oxidation of ultra-lean hydrogen, as well as any traces of CO and CO₂, without support fuel.
Emission-free combustion
Catator’s CataLite® Burner Series enables emission-free combustion of lean off-gas streams without the need for support fuel. The portfolio includes flameless off-gas combustion systems developed for Power-to-X applications within hydrogen electrolysis.
The burners are designed to deliver stable, emission-free combustion with immediate thermal response across a wide range of fuel compositions. This includes highly variable and ultra-lean off-gas streams. With a turndown ratio of up to 1:50, based on the energy content of the off-gases, the solution supports reliable operation under dynamic process conditions.
CataLite® Commissioning
The customer commissioned one CataLite® Burner 500 unit for installation at their site. The unit is used for treatment of hydrogen and CO vent-gas streams generated in high-temperature electrolysis processes, including both hydrogen production and co-electrolysis of H₂ and CO₂ for syngas generation in sustainable fuel synthesis.
This installation represents the fifth CataLite® Burner delivered to this customer to date. The image below shows the CataLite® Burner 500 unit on site prior to installation.
