Electrolyzer Applications

Catalytic solutions for hydrogen electrolysis systems

Electrolyzers are at the core of green hydrogen production, using electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. As hydrogen producers and Power-to-X developers scale up electrolyzer deployments globally, the demands on system design are increasing, both in terms of operational safety and hydrogen product quality.

Two distinct challenges arise in electrolyzer systems where catalytic technology plays a critical role.

Off-gas combustion is relevant when the electrolyzer produces hydrogen or CO that cannot be released to the atmosphere. This applies during startup and shutdown, when gas peaks cannot yet be directed to downstream processes, as well as in markets where venting hydrogen is regulated or prohibited. CO₂ electrolysis systems producing carbon monoxide also require continuous off-gas treatment.

DeOxo is relevant when the hydrogen produced will be used in downstream applications requiring high purity. Even trace amounts of oxygen in a hydrogen stream can damage fuel cell catalysts, cause corrosion, or create safety hazards. DeOxo removes oxygen down to ppm and sub-ppm levels.

Catator addresses both challenges through its CataLite® product line, providing proven catalytic solutions for electrolyzer off-gas combustion and hydrogen deoxygenation.
