Logistic Fuel Reforming

Fuel Reforming Catalysts and Reactors for Defense Applications

Logistic fuel reforming converts standard military and commercial diesel fuels into hydrogen rich synthesis gas. This application is critical for defense systems requiring silent, reliable power generation via fuel cells in remote or forward operating locations. By utilizing existing fuel supply chains, logistic fuel reforming eliminates the need for separate hydrogen infrastructure, making it a key technology for tactical power units, auxiliary power systems, and remote military microgrids.

The primary technical challenge in reforming logistic fuels, particularly military specification ground diesel like NATO F-54, stems from the highly complex hydrocarbon matrix and the presence of significant impurities. These fuels contain heavy aromatic compounds and high concentrations of sulfur, with tolerances extending up to 1000 mg/kg (1000 ppm). Conventional reforming systems suffer from rapid catalyst deactivation caused by carbon deposition, known as coking, and sulfur poisoning. Furthermore, military operations require systems to process an exceptionally wide range of fuel specifications across diverse climatic conditions, complicating thermal management and reaction kinetics within the reformer.

Catalytic reforming solves these operational challenges by enabling precise chemical conversion at lower temperatures than thermal cracking. Catator’s catalytic technology utilizes advanced formulation strategies to resist sulfur poisoning and suppress the chemical pathways that lead to coking. This alternative provides high conversion efficiency, stable hydrogen output, and long-term operational reliability when exposed to varying fuel chemistries and high sulfur environments.

Catator's Solution for Logistic Fuel Reforming

Catator addresses the rigorous demands of defense applications through its proprietary technology platforms. Utilizing the CataRex® technology platform, combining reforming with excellent heat transfer in the reactor, and advanced CataLite® Coating methods, Catator develops fuel processing systems capable of direct conversion of complex logistic fuels. The catalytic coatings are engineered to maintain high surface activity and structural integrity under the severe thermal and chemical stresses inherent to reforming heavy hydrocarbons.

Beyond catalyst and materials development, Catator has developed deep expertise in the process conditions required for stable and carbon-free diesel reforming. Through systematic development work, Catator has optimized a wide range of operating parameters governing the reforming process, including temperature and pressure profiles, steam-to-carbon and oxygen-to-fuel ratios, fuel-gas mixing, and process gas recycling strategies, as well as reactor design. This process knowledge has been demonstrated in integrated reforming systems operating on logistic fuels, validating performance across the conditions relevant to defense applications.

The technology is built on over 30 years of expertise in reformer engineering, providing a robust processing capability that accepts NATO F-54 ground diesel as procured under STANAG 1135.
