Catator supports project for energy autonomous buildings

Catator is currently part of a novel project aiming to develop a highly efficient energy supply system for energy autonomous multi-family buildings. This is done based on biomass gasification coupled with a SOFC (solid oxide fuel cell) and a PV-system (photovoltaic).

Catator is supporting the project with development and supply of a tar reforming catalyst and an anode off gas burner from the SOFC-system. The initial results from the mesh-based tar reforming catalyst shows that Catator reach over 99% conversion of the tars in the syngas from the gasification of the biomass.

In 2019, energy consumption of households amounted to 26.3% of the final EU energy consumption and 16.9% of the gross EU inland energy consumption [source: Eurostat]. Hence, for a deep decarbonisation of the energy supply of households the substitution of fossil fuel-based systems by RES-heating systems (Renewable Energy Sources) and the promotion of RES for electricity production is strongly demanded. The latter, since grid electricity production in the EU still significantly relies on fossil energy sources (38% of the electricity production in 2019 according to Eurostat). To cover both approaches, the application of combined heat and power production based on RES on the household/multifamily house level, so called micro-scale CHP, is meaningful.
